David Olere Drawings. Olere was the first person to draw plans and cross-sections of the crematories. The Collections of the Auschwitz Memorial have been enriched with 18 unique paintings by David Olère a French Jew of Polish descent Auschwitz prisoner and member of the Sonnderkomando who portrayed in his post-war works the tragedy of people murdered in the gas chambers of the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.
The paintings are frequently graphic and repulsive--the gruesome scenes seem to repel the audience rather than attract it. Images of Auschwitzcombines Olères artwork with text by his son Alexandre Oler. Only the hands and eyes of David Olère reproduce the horrible reality.
