I would not recommend a size smaller than 8 x 5 its very straining on your fingers to draw that small for very long periods of time. Although its not as cheap as the Intuos the multi-touch capabilities will let you advance with a single device instead of having to buy a new one when youre no longer a beginner. I would not recommend the smaller sizes though.
