During that time this subspecies has flourished to the point that the population was utilized to translocate turkeys to the Galiuro Mountains. We hunt the Goulds turkey in the state of Chihuahua Mexico on ranches two to five hours west of Chihuahua City on cumulative leases of around 80000 acres. It was first described in 1856 in northern Mexico and its range extended into the sky islands of southern Arizona and New Mexico.

Goulds turkey occupies the diverse habitats in the upper elevations of the arid southwest specifically Mexico with the highest densities in the State of Chihuahua where the oak woodlands transition to mixed conifer forests. It was first described by J. NWTF Huachuca Goulds Chapter - Sierra Vista Arizona - Conserve Hunt Share. The Gould turkey was introduced into the Huachuca Mountains in the mid-1980s.
